Ambassadors of Germany, France, and the UK in Libya visited Sunday the memorial of their soldiers who died on the grounds of Tobruk during the Second World War.

"Our countries came to Libya in the middle of the Second World War as enemies, and many died during the battles in and around this city. In 2022, 80 years later, we have returned to Tobruk as friends," a joint statement by the Western representatives read.

The diplomats emphasized the need to push forward the reconciliation process in Libya, as they highlighted that such a process might take generations to achieve.

"To us, Tobruk is a reminder that reconciliation is a task for generations but also that this work can bear fruits."

It may be worth noting that the coastal city of Tobruk, located in eastern Libya, was the focus of some of the most prolonged fighting between the conflicting parties in World War II.
